オープンソース・ソリューション最大手の レッドハット株式会社（東京都千代田区 平野正信代表取締役社長）は本日、11月17日に販売を開始したVine Linuxの最新バージョン2.1CRが、秋葉原のパソコンショップ「ぷらっとホーム」において発売からわずか10日間で1,000本を超す販売を記録したことを発表した。
Vine Linuxは、Project Vine（代表：鈴木大輔）が開発するLinuxディストリビューションで、使いやすい日本語環境で定評がある。この最新版2.1CRは、Vine Projectとレッドハットが去る7月４日に協力関係の強化を発表して以来、はじめリリースされた製品である。
今回、リリースされた2.1CRからVine Linuxの対応アーキテクチャは大幅に増え、これまでのインテルおよび互換CPUに加えて、PowerPC（Macintosh）、SPARC、Alphaの各CPU上でも稼働可能となった（ただし、Alpha対応版のみプレビューリリース）。レッドハットの製品パッケージには、これら4アーキテクチャ向けのバイナリインストールCDがすべて同梱されているため、購入後即座にさまざまなプラットフォームでの運用を開始できる。このようなパッケージ形態は世界初の試みであり、特にMacintoshユーザーからは発売前より大きな期待が寄せられていた。
ぷらっとホーム株式会社（東京都千代田区 本多弘男代表取締役社長）が運営する秋葉原のコンピュータショップ「ぷらっとホーム」では、Vine Linux 2.1CRの先行予約を受け付けていたが、この種のソフトウェアとしては異例ともいえる500本もの申し込みが殺到。昨今、Linuxへの注目度が高まりつつあるなかで、扱いやすさで定評のあるVine Linuxの人気が裏付けられた格好となった。さらに、ぷらっとホームの店頭で11月17日から2.1CRの販売を開始したところ、わずか5日間で1,000本を超す売上を記録した。また、同社のWebショップである「ぷらっとオンライン」でも、発売以来、売れ筋ランキングで堂々の1位を維持している（11月26日現在）。
ぷらっとホームでは、こうしたVine Linuxの人気を受け、独自流通チャネルを通じて地方への拡販を推し進めることを決定。さらに、当初は2001年3月までに3,000本の販売を目指していた販売計画を、今回はその倍の6,000本に上方修正した。しかし、今後の売上の推移によっては、販売計画をさらに上方修正しなければならなくなる可能性も高いという
なお、Vine Linuxは、バージョン2.0CRまでは株式会社技術評論社が販売を担当していたが、今回のバージョンからはレッドハット株式会社が正式な総販売元となり、同時にユーザーサポートも行うこととなった。レッドハットでは、Vine Linuxを、個人ユーザーだけでなく企業ユーザーをも満足させられる完成度の高いプラットフォームと捉えており、今後、Red Hat Linuxと併せて総合的で質の高いサポートを提供する。

IDCの調査によれば、ここ2年で有料のLinuxほど出荷が急速に伸びたサーバ・オペレーティング・システムはないという。1999年は、Linuxの出荷量がサーバ・オペレーティング・システム市場の24.6％を占め、1998年の15.8％から大幅に上昇すると予測されている。IDCは、現在最も普及しているのはRed Hat Linuxで、米国Linuxユーザの68.7％が採用しているという数字を挙げている。また、調査会社のNetcraft, Inc.
