オープンソース・ソリューション最大手のレッドハット 株式会社（東京都千代田区 平野正信代表取締役社長）は本日、同社が販売する「Red Hat Linux 6.2J」をプリインストールしたデルコンピュータ株式会社（川崎市幸区 浜田宏代表取締役社長）の高性能サーバ製品「PowerEdge（パ ワーエッジ）」シリーズ（今年5月発売開始）、及びアプライアンスサーバ「PowerApp（パワーアップ）」シリーズの「PowerApp.web（パワーアップ・ウェ ブ）100」Linux搭載モデル（今年6月販売開始）の合計出荷台数が、わずか6ヶ月で2,000台を突破したと発表した。
PowerEdgeシリーズは、インターネット・インフラストラクチャの構築を計 画する顧客に対して豊富な選択肢を提供する、フルラインアップのサーバ製品群。10万円を切る業界ブレークスルー価格のモデルを含むワークグループサーバをはじめとして、ハイレベルなパフォーマンス、拡張性、連続稼働性を発揮する部門サーバ、eコマースのようなミッションクリティカルなアプリケーシ ョンにも完璧に対応できるエンタープライズサーバ、さらには将来的なシステム拡張にも柔軟に適応するラックマウント専用サーバにいたるまで全9機種が 揃っている。
同シリーズには、各機種に要求される能力の違いに応じて、Intel PentiumIIIのシングルプロセッサ構成から、同PentiumIII Xeonのマルチプロセッサ（最 大8 CPU）構成までが用意されている。いずれの機種もデルならではの圧倒的 なコストパフォーマンスを実現しており、グループウェアから大規模データベースまで、顧客のあらゆるニーズに応える製品として多方面から高い評価を得ている。
アプライアンスサーバ「PowerApp.web100」は、Red Hat Linux6.2オペレー ティングシステム及びApache Webサーバアプリケーションを搭載し、インターネットやイントラネットのWebコンテンツを配信するなどのWebホスティング機能に最適化されたアプライアンスサーバ製品で、低コストで高いパフォーマンスを実現している。
去る5月10日より、デルはこのPowerEdgeシリーズにRed Hat Linux 6.2Jのプリインストールモデルを用意し、販売を開始。「PowerApp.web100」は、6月12日より、Red Hat Linux6.2Jをプリインストールして販売を開始した。工場内で サーバ製品にLinuxをインストールして出荷するのは国内サーバメーカーとし て初の試みであったが、顧客からは予想を超える大きな反響を呼び、11月に入ってついに出荷台数2,000台を記録した。この好調さは、もちろん購入製品の カスタマイズをWeb経由で行えるデル特有の見積もり・注文システムに負うと ころが大きい。しかしそれだけでなく、高いセキュリティ機能や、すぐに使える便利な商用Webアプリケーションを同梱したRed Hat Linuxの魅力も大きな要因として挙げられる。インターネットを駆使した対外的なeビジネスシステム にとどまらず、社内業務や企業間連携の利便性向上を図るためにイントラネットやエクストラネットの構築を考えている顧客にとって、Red Hat Linuxの導 入がベストソリューションとなることが理解されたといっていいだろう。
デルは、ネットワーク構築をトータルにサポートする企業顧客向けの新しいコンサルティング事業、デル・テクノロジー・コンサルティング（DTC）を11 月より開始した。DTCでは、デルがPowerEdge/PowerAppシリーズのハードウェ アについてのサポートを、またパートナーシップを組むレッドハットはプリインストールされたRed Hat Linuxについてのサポートを提供する。これにより 顧客は、自分が必要とするアプリケーションの要件を提示するだけで、各種機材やソフトウェアの導入から運用の方法、そしてメンテナンスについてまで、一貫したサービスを受けられる。Red Hat Linuxが持つハイレベルな機能や信 頼性は魅力だが、導入や運用がむずかしいと考えていた顧客も、DTCの充実し たサポート体制によって即座にシステムを構築でき、将来的にも大きな安心感を得ることが可能となる。こうしたサポート体制の充実により、PowerEdge/PowerAppシリーズのRed Hat Linux 6.2Jプリインストールモデルは、さらに販売台数が伸びるものと予想されている。
なお、デルでは引き続き、Red Hat Linuxの最新バージョン「Red Hat Linux 7J」のプリインストールモデルを PowerEdge/PowerAppシリーズのラインアップに加え、さらに販売を加速させていく予定である。

IDCの調査によれば、ここ2年で有料のLinuxほど出荷が急速に伸びたサーバ ・オペレーティング・システムはないという。1999年は、Linuxの出荷量がサ ーバ・オペレーティング・システム市場の24.6％を占め、1998年の15.8％から大幅に上昇すると予測されている。IDCは、現在最も普及しているのはRed Hat Linuxで、米国Linuxユーザの68.7％が採用しているという数字を挙げている 。また、調査会社のNetcraft, Inc.
