Navigating the complexities of migrating virtual machines (VMs) to the cloud just got simpler and more cost-effective for Red Hat OpenShift Service on AWS (ROSA) users. Exciting updates are on the horizon, designed to streamline your transition and optimize your cloud environment using Red Hat OpenShift Virtualization. From simplified Windows licensing on ROSA to a new migration incentive program and the availability of Red Hat Advanced Cluster Management for Kubernetes on the AWS Marketplace, we're bringing you the latest advancements to make your VM migration smoother and more efficient. Let's dive into these key developments and explore how they can benefit your organization.
Simplifying migration with Windows licensing support
We are pleased to announce the general availability of Windows license-included support for OpenShift Virtualization on ROSA, coming summer 2025. Now with license-included support, your Windows license cost is bundled directly into the Amazon bare metal EC2 instance pricing and billed per vCPU. This makes it easier to manage Windows VM licensing on ROSA, with costs that scale alongside your usage.
Windows license support will be available in all ROSA regions and can be enabled in the AWS console. You will incur Windows license fees by AWS for the number of cores in their bare metal instances. For additional questions about Windows licensing, check out the AWS and Microsoft FAQ.
New migration incentive program
Migrating your workloads from your previous virtualization provider to AWS is now easier and more cost effective. The AWS VMware Migration Accelerator program offers incentives for your organization moving your VMware Cloud on AWS workloads to OpenShift Virtualization on ROSA. By migrating at least 40 VMs per month, customers can earn up to $200 in AWS promotional credits per VM—or up to $400 per VM for larger migrations of 80+ VMs. These credits can be applied to any metered AWS service, helping offset the cost of migration and reducing the financial impact of running parallel environments during the transition.

Unlock Linux cost savings
ROSA offers significant potential for optimizing resource consumption and reducing virtualization costs. By allowing hardware overprovisioning, ROSA enables more efficient allocation of compute resources allowing you to run the same quantity of VMs on a smaller compute footprint and creating the potential for 30% to 60% annual cost savings when migrating RHEL VMs to ROSA. This approach mirrors the hardware overprovisioning customers are already leveraging on-prem today to purchase VMs, with the added benefit of unlimited RHEL subscriptions and improved operational efficiency due to site reliability engineering (SRE) automation and management resulting in less downtime, fewer security incidents and streamlined IT management.
