Con il nome quasi futuristico di Rhel5, Red Hat ha effettuato il piu importante aggiornamento del proprio sistema operativo enterprise degli ultimi due anni. Dietro lacronimo, che sta per Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, si nasconde lennesima sfida del mondo open source alla nemica Microsoft, che ha monopolizzato lattenzione negli ultimi tempi con il lancio di Vista. Con lintento di contrastare la strategia del sistema operativo "onnivoro", ma anche sempre piu grande e vorace, Red Hat propone agli utenti un disegno modulare, che porta a caricare solo le caratteristiche dellOs effettivamente ritenute necessarie.
Un peso importante nellannuncio riveste lintegrazione del software di virtualizzazione Xen a livello di kernel. Xen e frutto di un lavoro congiunto con Ibm che ha occupato gli ultimi due anni e di fatto consente di far girare diverse "copie" del sistema operativo su un unico server, in modo da poter sfruttare al meglio la potenza elaborativi a disposizione. Secondo il produttore, questo apre le porte a un impiego massiccio della piattaforma nelle architetture Soa. Gli sviluppi Linux realizzati in team con Ibm (nel Linux Technology Center) comprendono anche nuove caratteristiche di sicurezza (protezione e crittografia dei dati) e la piattaforma di sviluppo Real-Time Linux.
Rhel5 e disponibile in due versioni, ovvero quella "base" e quella Advanced Platform. Gli aggiornamenti sono gratuiti, rispettivamente, per i clienti delle attuali versioni As ed Es.
