Ridurre i costi di gestione delle applicazioni e' l'invito che Matthew Szulik, presidente e Ceo di Red Hat ha fatto alla comunita' dei suoi sviluppatori riuniti in California.
La societa', specializzata nella distribuzione di software opensource basato sul sistema operativo Linux, ha guadagnato credibilita' crescente nel corso degli anni e, oggi, vanta partnership con Oracle, Ibm, Dell (Michael Dell ne ha addirittura finanziato il capitale, alcuni anni fa), Intel, e Hp.
Questi vendor distribuiscono gran parte del software della societa' all'interno del proprio hardware, mentre Red Hat preferisce mantenere contatti diretti con la propria clientela di sviluppatori favorendo i progetti di contribuzione (che servono a migliorare il sistema operativo e le applicazioni collegate), come Fedora.
Nel corso del Summit 2007, che si tiene in questi giorni a San Diego, la societa' ha annunciato un nuovo programma, sviluppato di concerto con Ibm, che si propone di favorire l'adozione della propria distribuzione di Linux, Red Hat Enterprise, sui mainframe System z di Big Blue. L'iniziativa fornira' agli utenti soluzioni per la valutazione, il deployment e il supporto della piattaforma congiunta.
Le aziende e le amministrazioni pubbliche - dice Szulik - hanno iniziato a capire che la miglior sicurezza fisica associata all'installazione centralizzata di server e storage su mainframe puo' essere abbinata anche alla miglior gestione delle risorse, grazie all'impiego della nostra tecnologia di virtualizzazione, inserita all'interno di Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5, senza compromessi".
I nuovi System z potranno anche trarre beneficio dalla funzionalita' SeLinux (Security Enhanced Linux), sviluppato con l'ausilio della National Security Agency americana, che ha contribuito a migliorare sensibilmente le funzionalita' di protezione del sistema operativo opensource.
Le partizioni Linux all'interno dei mainframe - puntualizza il Cto di Red Hat, Brian Stevens - stanno crescendo sensibilmente, in virtu' della provata sicurezza e dell'ausilio che offrono al consolidamento delle applicazioni distribuite. Ecco perche' questo lavoro congiunto con Ibm evolvera'".
L'idea e' di supportare, con dei team tecnici di entrambe le societa', la comunita' opensource, per accelerare gli sviluppi autonomi sulla piattaforma congiunta Red Hat su System z.
