レッドハット株式会社（本社：東京都千代田区 平野正信社長）は、本年より、本格的に開始するエンタープライズ市場におけるLinuxサポートサービスビジネスの始動に伴い、webやデータベースシステムの構築で評価の高いアクシスソフトウェア株式会社 (豊島区東池袋 大塚裕章社長 ）と本日、技術提携を行ったことを発表した。
アクシスソフトウェアは、以前より、レッドハットとの協調ビジネスを進めており、Red Hat 6.2Jをベースとしたシステム開発を行っていた。最近では、ビクターエンタテインメント株式会社が提供する、最新アーティスト情報提供や楽曲試聴サービスおよび着信メロディダウンロードなどの携帯電話向けサービスの構築を行っており、Linuxを利用したインターネット、イントラネットベースのアプリケーション構築に対し、豊富な経験を有している。
今回の提携では、従来からの協調関係を、受注ベースから提案ベースへとさらに押し進め、OSカーネルあるいはデバイスドライバ、ミドルウェア、Web、データベース構築などで両社の技術をもちより、Linuxシステム構築サービスのノウハウを蓄積、サービスメニューとして、OSからアプリケーションに至る広範なサポートサービスを提供していく。 また、アクシスソフトウェアはテクノロジーパートナーとして、レッドハットのプロフェッショナルサービス部門と連携を図り、顧客のアプリケーション構築に対してテクニカルアドバイザリング業務も担当する。

IDCの調査によれば、ここ2年で有料のLinuxほど出荷が急速に伸びたサーバ・オペレーティング・システムはないという。1999年は、Linuxの出荷量がサーバ・オペレーティング・システム市場の24.6％を占め、1998年の15.8％から大幅に上昇すると予測されている。IDCは、現在最も普及しているのはRed Hat Linuxで、米国Linuxユーザの68.7％が採用しているという数字を挙げている。また、調査会社のNetcraft, Inc. (www.netcraft.com)によれば、2000年5月現在、公開Webサイトの36％がLinuxベースのオペレーティング・システムで運営されており、公開Webサイトのなかで最も高い人気を持つという。IDCの調査では、Linuxサーバに関する投資の40％がインターネット関連アプリケーション向けで、インターネットにおいてLinuxサーバは揺るぎない地位を確保しているという。 IDCは最後に、2002年までに、5,500万台以上の携帯型およびノートブック型情報端末が出荷され、2005年までに情報端末の出荷はPCを上回るだろうと予測している。レッドハットは、Linuxベース・アプリケーションの需要の高さに加え、業界リーダーたちと数々の提携を結ぶことで、Compaq、Computer Associates、Corel、Dell、Hewlett-Packard、IBM、Intel、Netscape、Novell、Oracle、SAPなど、業界をリードする数多くのソフトウェア、ハードウェアベンダーからオープンソースの支持を得ている。
