포스코는 현재 자사의 ERP AP 서버, 공정, 메일 시스템을 포함, 약 120여대의 서버를 RHEL 기반에서 운영하고 있다. 특히 이 가운데 ERP AP 서버는 기존 유닉스 시스템에서 리눅스 시스템으로 전환한 사례이며, 포스코는 이후 진행되는 서버 교체 작업에서 AP서버를 위주로 리눅스 마이그레이션을 점차 확대할 예정이다.
또한 포스코는 기존에 생산관리시스템 (MES)의 EAI를 미국의 상용 소프트웨어인 피오라노 기반에서 구축, 운영하였으나 자사의 계열사인 포스데이타에서 제이보스 WAS(웹 어플리케이션 서버) 및 MQ를 기반으로 UCube를 제작함에 따라 개발 비용 및 시간을 단축하였으며 현재 성공적으로 운영하고 있다.
포스코 정보기획실 정보서비스 그룹의 오정완 과장은 “IT 트렌드가 급변하고 이에 따른 사용자의 수요도 점점 다양해져 가는 상황에서 오픈소스를 도입함으로써 개발에 드는 비용 및 시간을 절약할 수 있었다. 특히 RHEL은 제품이 아닌 서브스크립션에 대해 지불하는 체계이기 때문에 유지보수 비용을 현격히 줄일 수 있었을 뿐 아니라 소프트웨어 및 하드웨어들과의 상호운용성이 높아 시스템을 안정적으로 운영할 수 있었다”고 말했다.

한편 레드햇 엔터프라이즈 리눅스는 현재 5.2 버전까지 출시되었으며, 가상 환경의 전력 소비를 줄일 수 있도록 설계된 한편 가상화 적용 가능 하드웨어의 범위를 크게 확장한 것이 특징이다. 또한 제이보스 WAS는 서비스지향아키텍쳐(SOA) 상에서의 서비스와 웹 어플리케이션을 구축, 디플로이, 통합, 조정하여 나타내기 위한 기업용 오픈소스 소프트웨어이다.
