Red Hat e Solaris presto si potranno gestire da una sola interfaccia, quella del Red Hat Network. Una mossa importante che, secondo un portavoce di Red Hat, aiutera' a portare utenti Solaris verso Linux. "Usiamo questo strumento - ha detto il portavoce - per aiutare chi vuole migrare da Solaris". L'interfaccia di gestione dovrebbe essere disponibile entro la fine dell'anno. Il Red Hat network, lo ricordiamo, e' un sistema per la gestione e l'aggiornamento del sistema operativo che usa Internet per distribuire patch e aggiornamenti di sicurezza.
Quando sara' disponibile gli amministratori potranno usare Red Hat Network per gestire entrambi i sistemi operativi con una sola interfaccia. Interessante notare che il nuovo servizio riguarda soltanto Solari, e non comprende altri sistemi Linux concorrenti di Red Hat. Secondo gli analisti di Pund-IT la nuova offerta potrebbe essere molto interessante in settori tradizionalmente di Sun, come le tlc e il finance, dove pero' Linux da tempo ha cominciato a suscitare interesse.Allo stesso tempo Red Hat ha rilasciato la nuova versione del sistema operativo Enterprise Linux, la 4. Si tratta del piu' importante aggiornamento dalla versione 3, rilasciata a ottobre 2003, e segna il passaggio al kernel 2.6. Molti degli aggiornamenti di sicurezza, inoltre, arrivano dal progetto Security Enhanced Linux dell'NSA. Non cambieranno i prezzi: la workstation costera' 179 dollari e il server in versione base costera' 349 dollari per processore. Per la versione Premium, invece, che comprende supporto telefonico 24x7, il costo e' di 2.499 dollari. Non disponibile il prezzo del modulo software per la gestione di Solaris.
