Red Hat (NYSE: RHT), leader mondiale nella fornitura di soluzioni open source, annuncia che il gruppo Kingfisher, principale retailer fai-da-te europeo e il terzo piu' grande del mondo, ha deciso di migrare a Red Hat Enterprise Linux con database Oracle tutti i 240 punti vendita Castorama e Brico per via della stabilita', del servizio e del supporto eccellenti forniti da Red Hat. L'azienda e' stata cosi' in grado di dimezzare il numero di server necessari e di ottenere un ritorno sugli investimenti in soli otto mesi. Al tempo stesso, Kingfisher ha ottenuto un incremento nelle prestazioni di dieci volte.
A causa della quantita' e la complessita' delle informazioni relative alla logistica e all'attivita' commerciale gestite in ogni punto vendita, l'affidabilita' e la disponibilita' del sistema rappresentano prerequisiti chiave per il dipartimento IT dell'azienda.
Dal 1997, i negozi Castorama e Brico utilizzano un sistema IT basato su due server: il primo era un server Digital UNIX Alpha, a supporto dei tool di produzione e delle applicazioni commerciali, oltre che del database Oracle v7 e dell'applicazione FORMS. Il secondo era un server NT per l'infrastruttura che gestiva la rete, i domini, la stampa e il file server. Quando il gruppo Kingfisher e' venuto a conoscenza del fatto che il supporto per server UNIX e NT sarebbe presto terminato, si e' trovato di fronte all'esigenza di rinnovare l'intera architettura IT dei punti vendita Castorama e Brico.
Il gruppo ha quindi fatto la scelta strategica di utilizzare soluzioni open source perche' la maturita' e l'affidabilita' di questa piattaforma erano tali da consentire a Kingfisher di pianificare una migrazione in tutta tranquillita'. In fase di selezione della distribuzione Linux, Kingfisher non ha avuto dubbi: stabilita' e supporto erano requisiti essenziali e il gruppo ha deciso che Red Hat Enterprise Linux rappresentava l'unica opzione.
Nel complesso, la maggior parte delle distribuzioni open source offriva le funzionalita' di cui avevamo bisogno, compresi i servizi di infrastruttura", ha dichiarato Bernard Grulois, Architecture and Infrastructure Manager di Kingfisher IT Services, la struttura IT mondiale del gruppo. "Ma solo Red Hat offriva una distribuzione Linux business-ready con i livelli di servizio, la garanzia e il supporto di cui avevamo bisogno per il sistema informativo mission-critical necessario per l'operativita' ottimale dei punti vendita europei dell'azienda".
L'architettura e' stata progettata per comprendere strumenti di produzione e database composti da Oracle AS10G con database Oracle 9i e WEBFORMS per le basi tecniche (iso-perimetro funzionale). Ogni negozio in Francia, Italia, Spagna, Polonia e Russia dispone oggi di Red Hat Enterprise Linux su un server HP ProLiant ML 370 G4 con 8Gb di memoria, processori Intel Dual-Core e 5X140 Go disk in RAID 1.
Dopo una prima fase di test di tre mesi in Spagna, i server sono stati implementati nei punti vendita francesi, italiani, polacchi e russi.
Con Red Hat Enterprise Linux, i servizi IT di Kingfisher hanno trovato una soluzione che permetteva di soddisfare tutte le esigenze dei negozi Brico e Castorama con un unico server, oltre alla possibilita' di gestire tool di produzione e servizi di infrastruttura dalla stessa macchina. Questo si e' tradotto in significativi risparmi e ad aggiornamenti e implementazioni ancora piu' rapidi.
Siamo assolutamente soddisfatti della nostra scelta", commenta Grulois.
