Red Hat (Nyse: RHAT), azienda leader mondiale nella fornitura di software open source, ha annunciato che l'aeroporto di Monaco, riconosciuto per il terzo anno consecutivo "Airport of the Year" d'Europa dalla societa' di ricerche sui trasporti aerei Skytrax, e' passato dai server e desktop Sun Solaris a Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Grazie alle soluzioni Red Hat, l'aeroporto ha potuto ottenere migliori performance, risparmi e un supporto affidabile.
Dopo aver riscontrato problemi di prestazioni con il sistema operativo Sun Solaris, in particolare con le applicazioni Java, l'aeroporto di Monaco ha effettuato una dettagliata analisi su soluzioni alternative in grado di migliorare le prestazioni dei sistemi IT. I risultati rivelarono che Red Hat Enterprise Linux, gia' parzialmente utilizzato nei sistemi IT dell'aeroporto, avrebbe potuto offrire sia i risparmi che le prestazioni desiderate. L'aeroporto di Monaco di Baviera parte quindi con la migrazione dei server da Solaris a Red Hat Enterprise Linux e, dopo aver riscontrato continue carenze di prestazioni con la soluzione Solaris, anche le postazioni desktop dell'aeroporto sono state migrate a Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop. Dal settembre 2006, la torre di controllo dell'aeroporto gestisce piu' di 30 server e 40 desktop Red Hat Enterprise Linux, soluzione utilizzata anche per mail server e software anti-virus.
La soluzione Red Hat Enterprise Linux Desktop svolge un ruolo importante nelle operazioni aeroportuali fornendo alla torre di controllo la tecnologia necessaria a garantire una buona gestione degli avvicendamenti degli aeromobili e di accoglienza dei passeggeri. Il sistema coordina gli spazi di parcheggio degli aerei, prendendo come input i dati grezzi dal sistema radar e utilizzandoli per calcolare i tempi di arrivo degli apparecchi e coordinare le attivita' logistiche in loco.
Per l'amministrazione di server e desktop, l'aeroporto di Monaco utilizza Red Hat Network unitamente a Red Hat Satellite Server, mentre per la gestione del database Oracle si avvale di Red Hat Cluster Suite che garantisce elevati livelli di affidabilita'. "Red Hat Network e' molto di piu' di un semplice vantaggio nella gestione remota dei nostri sistemi desktop. Con questo prodotto, Red Hat ottiene risultati superiori rispetto a tutti gli altri fornitori Linux che non hanno nulla di adeguato da offrire", ha dichiarato Hubert Bosl, head of Unix System Administration e Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) presso l'aeroporto di Monaco. "Con le soluzioni di Red Hat, abbiamo visto anche notevoli risparmi sui costi. Per un server SAP su Red Hat Enterprise Linux, i costi hardware e software ammontano a circa 10.000 euro, mentre per un server Solaris corrispondente l'importo si aggira intorno ai 25.000 euro, a cui occorre aggiungere i costi per il volume manager e altre funzioni necessarie in ambiente SAN".

Quale ulteriore conferma della validita' di supporto, affidabilita', prestazioni e risparmio sperimentati dall'aeroporto di Monaco con la migrazione alle soluzioni Red Hat, i progetti per il futuro includono l'implementazione di Red Hat Enterprise Linux sui sistemi server centrali che andranno a sostituire il cluster Veritas, e il sito web.
Nel 2007 l'aeroporto ha registrato un transito di 34 milioni di passeggeri classificandosi al 28esimo posto fra gli aeroporti piu' attivi di tutto il mondo. Entro il 2010 esso mira a diventare il piu' efficiente hub europeo e quasi certamente l'implementazione delle soluzioni Red Hat aiutera' a raggiungere questo obiettivo.
