L’Istituto Meteorologico Reale del Belgio rende più affidabile la sua infrastruttura con Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization

Grazie alle tecnologie di virtualizzazione di Red Hat l’Istituto risparmia sui costi e riduce al minimo il downtime

(Nasdaq: RHAT), leader mondiale nella fornitura di soluzioni open source, annuncia che l’Istituto Metereologico Reale del Belgio (KMI) ha effettuato una migrazione a Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization. Nelle previsioni dell’Istituto, questa implementazione garantirà risparmi considerevoli ottimizzando l’efficienza dei server già esistenti presso l’organizzazione.

KMI fornisce previsioni del tempo analizzando grandi volumi di dati meterologici. Per la natura dei suoi servizi, KMI si affida pesantemente al proprio ambiente IT e per questo motivo necessita di un’infrastruttura altamente disponibile e sempre attiva. Da sempre sostenitore delle soluzioni open source, l’Istituto è stato per sei anni cliente soddisfatto di Red Hat Enterprise Linux prima di decidere di virtualizzare sistemi e applicazioni con Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization.

Scopo di questo progetto era ottimizzare l’utilizzo delle risorse tecnologiche da parte dell’organizzazione e semplificare l’esecuzione di attività quali system management, test delle attività di sviluppo, migrazione e adozione di nuove applicazioni. KMI ha scelto Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization sula base dei risultati di benchmark ottenuti con la tecnologia hypervisor KVM (Kernel-based Virtual Machine) della soluzione.

La migrazione a Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization consentirà a KMI di ottimizzare l’utilizzo delle risorse IT, ridurre i costi e minimizzare il downtime dei server. La piattaforma di virtualizzazione supporta server DNS, DHCP, webmail e un server di produzione FTP per scambi con clienti di KMI oltre a un server per la Zimbra Collaboration Suite, per la gestione di email, calendari e contatti.

“Grazie a Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, prevediamo non solo di realizzare risparmi sostanziali, ma anche di godere di standard molto elevati in termini di prestazioni IT, in conformità con la nostra forte vision open source”, afferma Emmanuel Strobbe, systems engineer di KMI. Per migrare a Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization, KMI ha abbandonato una serie di server UNIX e Microsoft Windows. La nuova piattaforma Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization for Servers supporta i server virtuali di KMI che girano su software Red Hat Enterprise Linux e Microsoft Windows, come i server Windows per il login, i domain server Windows con Active Directory e un server antivirus per gli aggiornamenti di Windows. L’hardware si basa su un cluster di quattro server Dell PowerEdge R710 dotati di storage EMC NX4.

Il passaggio all’infrastruttura virtuale verrà attuato su fasi successive e completato entro la fine del 2012. Il team operativo utilizza già il nuovo software per le previsioni del meteo e per effettuare test.
