Milano, 17 dicembre 2012- Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), leader mondiale nella fornitura di soluzioni open source, ha annunciato la sua partecipazione a un’iniziativa dell’Unione Europea tesa a creare un’architettura flessibile ed estesa per il Data-as-a-Service, che le aziende potranno utilizzare per rintracciare ed analizzare i dati pubblicati sull’intero web pubblico. L’iniziativa è stata chiamata LEADS, acronimo di “Large-scale Elastic Architecture for Data-as-a-Service”.
Piuttosto che mantenere i propri dati in-house all’interno di data center dedicati, può essere economicamente ed ecologicamente conveniente archiviarli presso un’infrastruttura condivisa. Obiettivo dell’iniziativa LEADS è creare un framework Data-as-a-Service (DaaS) decentralizzato, in grado di operare su una serie elastica di micro-cloud. LEADS fornirà un modo di raccogliere, archiviare ed effettuare ricerche su dati di pubblico dominio, oltre che di processare questi dati in tempo reale. Inoltre, i dati pubblici possono essere arricchiti ed integrati con dati privati, mantenuti su incarico del cliente, e la processazione dei dati in tempo reale può essere resa ancor più completa con versioni storiche, dei dati pubblici e di quelli privati.

La presenza di Red Hat nel consorzio potrà aiutare gli strumenti sviluppati nell’ambito del progetto LEADS ad avere maggiore visibilità nella comunità open source, soprattutto in Europa. Oltre a ciò, Red Hat gioca un ruolo importante nella definizione degli standard e, se le condizioni lo consentiranno, intende guidare l’evoluzione delle tecnologie e delle specifiche di LEADS verso standard riconosciuti, in modo da evitare ogni forma di vendor lock-in. I risultati open source del progetto LEADS aiuteranno a garantire che ogni standard creato sarà basato su esperienze reali.
La piattaforma LEADS sarà progettata fin dalle basi tenendo conto di privacy, sicurezza, efficienza energetica, disponibilità, scalabilità e performance. Il progetto verrà validato su casi specifici di utilizzo, inclusi la ricerca dei dati sul Web ed il loro sfruttamento in diversi ambiti applicativi.
Sono diversi i progetti open source sponsorizzati da Red Hat che potranno trarre vantaggio dai progressi che il progetto LEADS porterà. Tra questi:

- GlusterFS (cluster file system. www.gluster.org)
- Hibernate (persistence framework relazionale, www.hibernate.org)
- HibernateOGM (database persistente per NoSQL, www.hibernate.org/subprojects/ogm.html)
- OpenShift Origin (Platform-as-a-Service auto-scaling, https://openshift.redhat.com/community/open-source.)
Il consorzio LEADS è composto da università e centri di ricerca (Université de Neuchatel UniNE, Svizzera; Technische Universität Dresden TUD, Germania; Telecommunications System Institute TSI, Grecia), i cui membri si sono mostrati capaci di sottoporre nuove idee alla comunità scientifica, in modo rapido ed efficace. Le grandi aziende (BM-Yahoo!, Red Hat e Adidas) hanno la forza e la capacità di proporre nuove tecnologie e metodi per il loro utilizzo, per i loro clienti e come nuovi standard operativi. In particolare, Yahoo! e Red Hat sono leader nello sviluppo e nella distribuzione di software open source, e l’impatto potenziale legato all’offerta dell’infrastruttura LEADS alla comunità potrebbe essere enorme. Infine, anche la partecipazione di AoTerra (SME) è fondamentale per il progetto, perché porta competenze specifiche su infrastrutture micro-cloud efficienti a livello energetico, e permette un’estesa implementazione della piattaforma LEADS.
